Episode 39
The Apostles and the Holy Spirit
During this age of the Holy Spirit outpouring, we discover that the apostles were to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which would result in not only the power of guidance in the revelation of truth but also other powers, including miraculous healing powers, raising the dead, etc.
This study examines the promises that Jesus gives the apostles in John 14-16 and the early chapters of the Acts of the Apostles. A study of these texts reveal that the promises given were addressed to the apostles. During the earthy ministry of Jesus, the seventy were given similar power granted to them when sent to the house of Israel (the Jews). It is not clear that these continued once the mission was accomplished but certainly could have been among the many members who were given gifts as the Spirit willed it. By the time of Christ's last two weeks in Jerusalem before his crucifixion and after the resurrection, the torch appears to have been handed down to the apostles, not the seventy. They were His ambassadors when ascending the heaven.
